Garcinia Cambogia Extract

Introduction

This extract is made from special quality dried rind of the fruit. Garcinia Cambogia is commonly known as Malabar Tamarind. This fruit is mainly used for culinary purposes in South India. The fruit is commonly called as “monkey fruit”. The trees in this genus are also commonly called as mangosteen and saptrees.

Garcinia cambogia extract is the calcium salt of hydroxy citric acid (HCA), which is obtained from water extract of Garcinia cambogia fruit . It is non-toxic, tasteless, odorless powder and found to be very effective herbal alternate for controlling obesity and cholesterol by inhibiting lipogenesis in our body. 

Plant Anatomy

Garcinia is a plant genus of the family Clusiaceae which is native to Asia, Australia, tropical and southern Africa, and Polynesia. The fruits are a food source for several animals. These are evergreen trees and shrubs. The fruit of the plant is a berry with fleshy endocarp.

The Fruit

With thin skin and deep vertical lobes, the fruit of Garcinia and related species range from about the size of an orange to that of a grapefruit; Garcinia looks more like a small yellowish, greenish or sometimes reddish pumpkin.

The color can vary considerably. When the rinds are dried and cured in preparation for storage and extraction, they are dark brown or black in color.

Along the west coast of South India, Garcinia is popularly termed "Malabar tamarind," and shares culinary uses with the tamarind (Tamarindus indica).

Garcinia grows in India in the evergreen forests of the Western Ghats, the Southern Konkan region and in Goa. It is also cultivated in the Southern districts of Maharashtra and on the lower slopes of the Nilgiris mountains.

Chemical constituents

The extract is standardized to contain 50-60% of Hydroxy citric acid. Most species in Garcinia are known for their gum resin, brownish-yellow from xanthonoids such as mangostin, and used aspurgative or cathartic, but most frequently – at least in former times – as a pigment.

Method of action

 The active principle in Garcinia Cambogia is (-)-hydroxycitric acid(or HCA). On a dry weight basis, HCA constitutes from 20-30% of the berry. Garcinia Cambogia works in two ways 
1. by suppressing appetite 
2. by inhibiting lipid synthesis
This latter mechanism is based on the theory that inhibition of lipid biosynthesis or enhance lipid metabolism interfere with mechanisms that produce and maintain obesity.
